The challenge for HBO Max was to develop a premium sonic identity worthy of one of entertainment's most celebrated storytelling brands. Extending across streaming experiences, original programming, theatrical campaigns, prestige events, and emerging media, the objective was to reinforce HBO's reputation for exceptional storytelling while creating a cohesive emotional signature across every audience touchpoint. It was important to me that the core of the sonic identity system be whistle-able and instantly memorable, but flexible in its potential usage and development. I ultimately arrived at a simple, yet elegant 4-note theme. Using these 4 notes as the foundation of HBO Max’s sonic branding system, multiple different themes could be created to better cater to different global audiences that may respond differently to different styles of music. I specifically crafted the sonic language to balance refinement with dramatic impact, creating an unmistakable brand presence that could evolve across platforms while elevating every viewer experience.

The challenge for Hulu was creating a bold sonic identity that reflects Hulu’s position as the prime destination for current television, award-winning originals, and live entertainment. The objective was to create an audio framework capable of connecting product experiences, advertising, sports programming, original content, and cultural partnerships while reinforcing Hulu's modern and dynamic personality. Whether you are settling in for a movie at home, gathered with your friends for a sporting event, or exploring new original content, the sonic identity should reflect the cinematic feeling of engaging with Hulu’s content. Hulu’s sonic identity starts with the sound of people chattering, and when the logo itself appears, the chatter cuts off, symbolizing the feeling of “cutting out the noise” and truly engaging with the content in front of you. Those with keen ears (or a keen memory) will know that Hulu’s sonic brand already uses this exact effect. I want to stress that creating original and unique sonic brand identities is of the utmost importance to me. However, after a bit of experimentation, I recognized how perfect of a choice this was, and wanted to preserve it while creating my own unique take on the logo itself.

The challenge for Netflix was to develop a globally recognizable sonic identity capable of unifying every audience touchpoint — from the moment viewers open the app to original series promotions, live fan experiences, gaming, and future entertainment platforms. The objective was to deepen emotional connection, strengthen brand recognition, and create a cohesive audiovisual language that could evolve alongside the world's leading streaming service. You will notice that I preserved the classic “dun dun” rhythmic motif used in Netflix’s current sonic branding identity. Oftentimes the movement in the logo animation itself can give clues to what the sonic brand should sound like, and the “dun dun” for the animated Netflix “N” is already a perfect fit (in my opinion). I saw an opportunity to strengthen and improve the part following the “dun dun,” the “reverse” end portion of the logo. Because we zoom into the Netflix “N” on a granular level (where it eventually ends on one single line), I wanted to use a granular crystal-like effect to reflect that sonically. Ultimately, the theme feels both nostalgic and modern, reflecting Netflix’s trail-blazing roots as the first major streaming platform as well as their adaptability and continued evolution in the modern streaming landscape.

The challenge for Disney+ was to create a sonic brand system that could bring together its vast universe of stories under one unmistakable audio identity. Spanning the streaming platform, marketing campaigns, franchise experiences, theme park integrations, and future digital innovations, the goal was to celebrate the magic of Disney while creating a consistent emotional thread across every listener and viewer interaction. After closely evaluating Disney+’s current sonic brand identity, I arrived at the conclusion that the current sonic brand identity for Disney+ is already perfect. From a music theory perspective, going from C major to E major is a chromatic mediant relationship, which is famous for sounding expansive, cinematic, magical, dreamlike, and heroic. Without boring you too much with music theory, the recontextualization of the French Horn “E” note that occurs in both chords creates continuity, which is perceived as both familiar and simultaneously surprising. From an instrumentation perspective, the sound of Disney has always been the orchestra, and the use of French Horn (often considered the ‘hero’s instrument’ for its round and heroic tone) and orchestral string section perfectly pay homage to this sonic history.
